Equipment workshop...

Week 3

Today we explored the different types of equipment we can use in ICT and across the curriculum.

Control and monitoring technology

What is computer control?
  • The use of a computer to control a device.
  • Set of instructions programmed into a machine, which cause it to operate.
Examples of computer control:
- Microwave
- Digital alarm clock
- Traffic lights
- Bar code scanners
- Washing machine

Why do we use computers to control things?
-Accuracy
-Convenience
-Ease
-Cost effective
-Efficiency

Equipment we looked at in today's lesson:

Beebot

The Beebot is a programmable toy commonly used within  schools.

Award winning programmable floor robot, the Bee-Bot's simple and child friendly layout is a perfect starting point for teaching control, directional language and programming to young children.
  • Robust and small design
  • Clear and bright buttons
  • Memory of up to 40 steps
  • Clear and bright buttons
  • No confusing degrees to program
  • Sounds and flashing eyes confirm your instructions
  • Fantastic cross-curricular resources also available
  • Moves accurately in 15cm steps at a time and turns in 90°

Digital microscope

Digital microscopes are quick and easy to use and perfect for use within schools. They are particularly useful for science but can be used across the curriculum.

Data logger

The data logger does what it says on the tin; logs data. The simple to use ones as pictured here > log temperature, sound and light.

What can they be used for in schools?

  • Finding out about the local area (geography, PSHE)
  • Testing materials e.g. what's the best material for light or sound proofing? (DT, science)
  • Analysing habitats (science)
  • Growing plants (science)
  • Testing pitch and tone (music)
